BOTSWANA TRADE COMMISSION ENGAGES WITH THE MAUN BUSINESS COMMUNITY

Botswana Trade Commission (BOTC) in its quest to sensitise businesses on its mandate, an awareness workshop was held in Maun ( 18th February 2020) to abreast businesses and stakeholders on the mandate of BOTC. Addressing participants, the Acting CEO of BOTC, Mr Motlogelwa stated that the commission was established in 2013 to exercise the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) agreement of 2002. He further informed partipants that BOTC regulated imports of goods into Botswana and also provides Infant Industry Protection (IIP) to emerging or growing businesses.
Participants, expressed their gratitute to BOTC and Business Botswana for the workshop and expressed concerns that the IIP period of 8 years was not enough moreso that Botswana businesses are growing at a slow rate and thus requested BOTC to engage with SACU to increase the protection period.
In his closing remarks, the Maun Business Council Chairperson, Mr James Evans, hailed the workshop a success and pledged Business Botswana's support to BOTC in order to achieve its mandate.
