Business Botswana Supports Inclusive Labour Standards and Workplace Safety
18 May, 2026
This morning, Business Botswana CEO, Tumi Mbaakanyi, delivered welcome remarks at the Tripartite Knowledge Sharing Workshop organised by the International Labour Organization (ILO). Held in line with Convention 144, the workshop brought together stakeholders from across sectors to deliberate on International Labour Standards identified for prioritised ratification, as well as the effective operationalisation of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) roadmap.
In her remarks, Ms Mbaakanyi reaffirmed Business Botswana’s commitment to promoting fair labour practices, workplace safety and human rights-driven governance. Private sector is already practising responsible business using ESG principles and there are continuous efforts to encourage more. She also highlighted the organisation’s ongoing work with relevant stakeholders to address challenges faced by truck drivers at border posts, as part of its advocacy efforts for members. An evidence based survey will be carried out as soon as possible to unravel the issue which does not only work against the decent work principle but is also an opportunity cost on trade income. She also shared that after the workshop, relevant engagements would be held with the private sector on the proposed ratifications to ensure practical and reasonable alignment on same.
Working within tripartite structures, Business Botswana continues to collaborate closely with stakeholders to improve labour standards, encourage constructive dialogue and support safer, more productive workplaces.
